For those of you interested in earliest/last known uses of postmarks, in the Oct. Pumpenmeier auction (Germany), I just noticed a cover that sold that is a new latest known date for the Fuglafjordur star cancel -- 12 Aug 1929. The previously latest date of use was 10 Jan 1929 so this is quite a bit closer to the date at which point they removed the star...

Hi Geoff,

This is certainly very interesting. Thanks for sharing!

Some time ago, I had the idea about setting up a wiki-like resource where members could add this kind of data (and thus keep it always updated) together with high-res scans to support it (whenever possible). I also wanted to add other things like good scans of different cancels (which can be obtained rather easily with free image processing software and little work)

Do you think this would be a good initiative? Would any other member be interested in taking part of this?

Regards,
David.-

Hi Geoff,
thanks for the interesting post! 30 euros are a very reasonable price for this very special cover...

In an earlier post about the Vestmannhavn mute cancel you wrote:

While I was at Nordia 2009 in Iceland, I found a new earliest known usage of the Vestmanna mute cancel (see attached). While it's definitely far from the best in terms of quality, the 12.02.1930 transit cancel establishes a new date a couple of weeks earlier than the previously recorded earliest date in DAKA GF10 of 27.02.1930.

Now I wonder which catalogue you refer to. In Wowern's GF 10 from 1991 I can't find any information about earliest dates of usage. Maybe you can tell me where I can find this information (also about the other star cancels).

@ David: I think this is a great idea which I'd really like to share. In the last weeks I had the idea of a databased homepage with information about Faroese postmarks, pictures from stamps, clips, covers etc. and also about auction results. But your idea seems to have the same potential and has the advantage that everyone who wants to can contribute to it.

Regards,
Matthias

I was referring to the latest edition of the DAKA GF10 catalog. While the year 2000 is a while in the past, that edition is the latest catalog at this point. I am working with a number of contributors on a newer version which we are hoping will be published next year.

About half of the earliest/latest dates for star and star removed cancels will have updated dates in the new edition.
